An English Castle

Portchester Castle is a medieval castle built within a Roman fort at Portchester. It is located at the northern end of Portsmouth Harbour.

You are able to walk around the outside of the castle and enjoy views up towards Portsmouth Habour. The inside of the castle is open to public and the keep is in the care of English Heritage.

  1. The Romans must have seen the site’s defensive possition.The Castle a fortification but also a residence of kings. Norman kings used it when crossing the Channel. Richard II built a palace within it’s walls, it served in an ofensive site forming a rallying point for the troops who embarked from here on the expedition that led to the Battle of Agincourt. It must have looked impressive to anyone coming into Portsmouth Castle.
