Take a while

I have visited Seaham in County Durham twice before both times in the rain today the weather was good and I was able to take more photographs of the modern war memorial on the sea front. The iron Tommy by Ray Lonsdale which I have feature in the past was intended to represent a Tommy reflecting on the stress of the war.

The Town – As early as 1823, the 3^rd Marquess had approached the architect John Dobson with a view to his drawing up plans for a town to be built around the harbour. Dobson did so, but due to lack of funds it did not happen and the town instead grew in a more piecemeal fashion. At the start the town was called Seaham Harbour to differentiate it from the more ancient village however over time, the whole area became known as Seaham.

Seaham Colliery suffered an underground explosion in 1880, which resulted in the loss of over 160 lives, including rescuers.

The UK pit closures hit the local economy hard, and Seaham sank into a depressed state in the 1980s and 1990s, however today the town is on the up
