Elephant Hawk-moth caterpillar

Spotted in the car park at Hill Head Hampshire, an Elephant Hawk-moth caterpillar. They can grow up to 85mm in length and is said to be the largest and most distinctive caterpillars to be found in the UK.

The species is named after the caterpillars resemblance to an elephants trunk.

When retracted the caterpillars head recoils giving the impression of a much larger head. The two large ‘eye’ markings behind the head also suggest a much larger animal, and can appear startling to predators.

The moth has a wingspan of 45 to 50 mm it is coloured pink and green affairs, with a streamlined appearance.
