The castle’s origins date back to around the 1200s when a stone keep was built on a defensible rocky outcrop overlooking the Firth of Clyde. The Kennedy family prospered, with one member marrying a daughter of King Robert 111 On 4th August 1563, Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Dunure Castle as the guest of Gilbert Kennedy for 3 days. By the mid 1700s, Dunure Castle was a ruin. After many years as a derelict ruin, the castle has now been consolidated and is now accessible to visitors. Below the Castle is a small harbour.
