East Lothian Bird Boxes

16th Century Dovecote room for 500 birds here.

During our stay on East Lothian, I have noticed a feature on the landscape which we do not see in Hampshire – Dovecotes or Doocots as they are known locally. You see them standing alone on farmland from a distance looking like a windmill base to cotes in farmyards, large houses and castles.

home for 2000 birds in this one.

The resource the dove or pigeon was a stable food and the droppings used as a fertilizer on the fields.
